Dental Insurance Providers

As the cost of visiting the dentist continues to rise and access gets harder dental insurance is becoming a necessity to maintain good oral health.

Although private medical insurance provides dental insurance, cover is usually limited. There may be restrictions on amounts paid, what is covered, or even a total exclusion if the policyholder has not visited the dentist on a regular basis.

By taking out a dental insurance policy – also referred to as a dental plan – policyholders can claim for treatment whether they choose to go privately or via the NHS. Private dental insurance contributes towards the costs of routine treatment, dental emergencies and serious dental problems.

There are more and more dental plans appearing on the market as independent providers offer an alternative to people affected by the lack of access to NHS dentists. Many dentists now only operate privately, and those that are able to find an NHS one are still made to pay for routine dental work.

There is no standard dental insurance policy available, so cover differs from insurer to insurer. Most will cover routine visits to the dentist, prescription charges or cosmetic work, while some cover emergency visits and / or treatment following an accident.

Some dental plans also include optical care, which typically covers the costs of eyesight tests, prescription spectacles, and contact lenses. However, repairs to frames, non-prescription glasses and contact lens solutions are not usually covered.
