The very first training course for orthodontic therapists in the UK has been launched in Yorkshire, at the Leeds Dental Institute .
Students at the institute will undergo a 45-week course which, once completed, will lead to a Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy from the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England .
The course is believed to be the first hands-on dental course in Britain, with the majority of the training taking place outside of a hospital setting.
All of the students enrolled at the Leeds Dental Institute already have a certificate in orthodontic nursing and have a registered specialist trainer to help guide them.
Once the course has been completed, each qualified therapist will then be able to carry out much of the work traditionally done by orthodontists such as taking impressions, removing brackets and wires and fitting orthodontic bands.
Speaking at the official opening of the course, John Vandridge-Ames - registrar of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England - told students "Courses like this do not happen easily. You are charter members of a new and exciting profession ."
Indemnity cover is provided by Dental Protection Ltd for all those involved in the course .
