The UK's General Dental Council has, in principle, agreed to abolish its current system for adding any additional qualifications achieved by dental professionals to its registers .
The decision was made at a public meeting on 6 December, although the GDC will consult on the move before implementing any changes.
The GDC said that dental professionals who already have extra qualifications listed on the registers will face no changes while the consultation takes place, although dental professionals won't be able to add any additional qualifications in this period.
The additional qualification system has been in doubt for some time, with concerns raised that recognition of additional qualifications implied considerable endorsement by the GDC.
In addition the policy was also seen as inconsistent and unfair to many registrants, including dental care professionals for whom there is no formal recognition system and those waiting to have qualifications added to the register.
Hew Mathewson, president of the GDC, said: "Dental professionals should not be discouraged from taking further additional qualifications to improve their practice, they can after all still use any skills learnt in these in their practice ."
"The GDC has an obligation to ensure that information on the registers is robust and of clear benefit to patients . This consultation will allow us to consider all the issues."
He added: "This subject has already generated a lot of discussion and we encourage as many people as possible to let us have their views."
