British Dentists Suffering From High Stress Levels

Tue, 09 Oct 2007

UK dentists suffer from some of the worst stress and mental problems experienced in the country, according to new research .

The latest findings from a new dental study have prompted Hale-based stress management consultant Ros Edlin to work, in conjunction with dental specialists, on changing the work experience of dentists .

She said: "Dentists get very stressed because they are working with customers who don't want to be there; because they are dealing with them very intimately and with time pressure, and at the same time they have to run their own business ."

"Statistics do seem to suggest a very high suicide rate among dentists and dental nurses," Edlin added.

The consultant, who prior to becoming a specialist in stress management worked as a social worker, is now working with companies to make going to work a more enjoyable experience.

Edlin is currently in charge of stress awareness training for groups of employers of all kinds, which focuses at the causes of stress and what can be done to combat them.

"It’s always better to prevent stress than to deal with it later, if you can," she concluded.
