The sixth annual Colgate Oral Health Month has arrived, with this years event aiming to raise awareness of periodontal health in general dental practice by reminding patients that healthy teeth require healthy gums .
The event has become a leading UK campaign for establishing and promoting improved oral health habits and includes a winning partnership in the form of Colgate and the British Dental Association - with both working with dental professionals to deliver specific key oral health messages to patients across the UK .
A recent Colgate survey of 480 dental professionals, with regards to their patients gingival and periodontal health, found that over 34 per cent had seen an increase in levels of gingivitis and periodontitis, while 49 per cent said their patients were not at all, or very, aware, of the overall state of their gum health .
The Colgate Oral Health Month provides the entire dental team with the opportunity to get involved in a nationwide campaign that includes forms of media promotions such as TV advertising .
Throughout September a roadshow will travel around major cities in the UK, giving hygienists the chance to give tips and demonstrate appropriate brushing techniques to improve gum health .
Over 80 per cent of UK dental practices have registered to take part in Colgate Oral Health Month, with each receiving a practice pack that contains educational materials and patients samples.
In addition, each registered practice will receive the 2007 Colgate Oral Health Month CPD programme, which over the last two years has worked with dental professionals to develop strategies on improved communication of general preventive advice.
Colgates 2007 programme is hoping to continue to build on those skills, while placing specific emphasis on efficient prevention and awareness of periodontal disease .
