BDA Express Frustration At Refusal On Financial Clawback Amnesty

Thu, 06 Sep 2007

The British Dental Association (BDA) has spoke of its disappointment regarding the news that the Department of Health will not consider relinquishing financial clawback for dentists who have not reached their contract targets.

Last week The BDA last week requested an amnesty for UK dentists who had completed a considerable amount, but not 100 per cent, of their units of dental activity for 2006/07.

Dr Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer for England said (in a letter to Dr Lester Ellman - chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee) the majority of dentists have met their requirements and that the decision, as to whether funding in cases of significant underperformance should be clawbacked or not, is a matter for PCTs and not the Department.

Reacting to the decision, Dr Ellman commented: "This is obviously disappointing news for dentists ."

"We know of some extremely worrying cases where dentists fear clawback and are anxious about what this will mean for the viability of their practice ."

She added: "This is a missed opportunity to win back some confidence from the profession, but The BDA will continue to support our members in addressing their many concerns."
