Dentists To Get GBP400,000 Incentive To Remain In NHS

Tue, 26 Feb 2008

Sheffield’s dental practices are being offered a £400,000 cash incentive to remain with the NHS .

A total of 17 practices in the city will be offered the extra funding by the Sheffield Primary Care Trust if they continue to accept new NHS patients, or if they provide faster treatment to patients waiting to receive NHS dental care .

"This is a great opportunity to make sure people don't have to wait too long for dental care, by offering earlier treatment appointments," commented John Green, Director of Dental Public Health for Sheffield.

Sheffield PCT is also set to inject a further £70,000 into two specialist orthodontic practices in the city to ensure that those who are currently awaiting an orthodontic assessment at these practices will be seen to faster.

The cash injection will also mean that at least 20 more patients will begin treatment before this summer.

Julia Newton, Director of Finance for Sheffield PCT, explained: ‘The PCT is committed to continuing to improve the NHS dental services offered to Sheffield people."

"We are aware that there are difficulties for people in different areas of the city to access NHS dental care, which is why we are currently maximising our financial resources to ensure money is spent where it is needed most."

"This latest investment reflects the PCT's aims outlined in the recent ‘Achieving Balanced Health Strategy’," she added. "We are working hard to ensure improved health care services are equally accessible."
