Mon, 24 Nov 2008

A dentist from South Tyneside has received an MBE for his ‘services to NHS dentistry '.

Matthew Gill, a partner at Dean Road Dental Practice, was presented with the prestigious honour by Prince Charles at the annual ceremony held in Buckingham Palace, London.

The 37-year-old said he was delighted to have been one of 100 people who received the award on the day but insisted he still has no idea who nominated him for the honour.

He commented: "It was a special day, a fabulous experience and something I will remember for my whole life. I feel lucky and very privileged to have received this honour."

"I would love to thank the person/s who nominated me as I still have no idea who they are."

"It hasn't altered my day to day life," he added. "I am still enjoying the work I do, but I do have a big smile on my face whenever I remember the day."

Commenting on his meeting with Prince Charles, Gill said: "He was quite chatty, and asked some questions about dentistry . He seemed very well informed and a very pleasant person."

"He did give me a big smile, his teeth were very good, slightly crowded but very clean."
