New Specialist List In Special Care Dentistry Opened

Mon, 06 Oct 2008

The General Dental Council (GDC) opened its new Specialist List in special care dentistry last week following a major review of the Specialist Lists and wide consultation .

According to the GDC, special care dentistry is concerned with improving the oral health of individuals and groups in society who have one of, or (more often) a combination of physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability .

The Specialist List consists of registered dentists who meet certain conditions and are entitled to use a specialist title. Although dentists do not have to be entered onto a Specialist List to carry out the practice of any particular specialty, they must be on the list to use the 'Specialist' title.

Interested dentists have a two-year "transitional period" (to 30 September 2010) in which to apply to join the list on the basis of their specialist training, qualifications and experience. After the two-year period, dentists will be required to hold a Certificate of Completion in Specialist Training in order to join.

Dentists wishing to join the new list can download an application pack from the GDC websitewww.gdc-uk.org - or contact the GDC registration team on 020 7344 3741.

The GDC holds 13 Specialist Lists in total, each designed to reassure the public that those using the title 'Specialist' have demonstrated they have met GDC-approved standards for entry to the lists.
