A Scottish dentist has been struck off the register for misconduct following a hearing by the General Dental Council (GDC).
Andrew Boyd, who practised at the Barassie Street Dental Practice in Troon, North Ayshire, for 18 years, was removed from the register after the GDC found that the treatment of more than 900 of his former patients had to be reviewed and that 100 of those required ‘immediate treatment'.
The dentist’s negligence came to light after an investigation was launched by the NHS in 2006 in response to complaints from Mr Boyd’s patients.
At the GDC hearing it was revealed how Mr Boyd had in some cases failed to examine patients properly, provide dental treatment plans or record an adequate medical history.
In their report, the council said that during his time at the Barassie Street Dental Practice (1987-2005), he did not provide adequate advice and treatment in respect of caries to 101 patients, did not provide adequate periodontal advice and/or treatment to 89 patients and neglected to provide adequate endodontic advice and/or treatment in respect to 61 patients.
As a result, the dental committee concluded that in all the circumstances Mr Boyd was not fit to practise, leading to his removal from the register.
