Dental Health Warning Over Breath Mints And Throat Lozenges

Mon, 30 Mar 2009

A leading cosmetic dentist has warned that some seemingly healthy products, such as breath mints and throat lozenges, may have a negative effect on a person's dental health .

According to dental expert Dr Rahul Doshi, heart burn tablets, breath mints, throat lozenges and cough drops can cause severe damage to teeth due to the high level of sugar they contain.

Doshi explained that when exposed to sugars, the natural bacteria in the mouth produces an acid, which eats through tooth enamel and can cause cavities and other dental conditions to develop.

He added that although mints and lozenges disintegrate quickly in the mouth, the eroding of the tooth enamel can have a lasting effect.

To help maintain good oral health, the dentist recommended people choose sugar-free versions of healthy products, limit their daily consumption and to ensure they clean their teeth thoroughly after using such products.
