Dental patients in Cumbria have been boosted by the opening of four new NHS dental practices .
A total of £1.75 million has been spent on the surgeries in Workington, Whitehaven, Maryport and Egremont, which will provide care for an estimated 30,000 people nearly double the current waiting list.
NHS Cumbria, the countys primary care trust (PCT), awarded the contracts to Oasis Dental Care Ltd, adding to the groups current network of 170 community dental practices across England and Wales.
Operations manager Caron Best said patients are already showing a strong interest in new surgeries, with many having gone a long time without seeing a dentist .
She commented: "Nationally theres been a real issue for patients wanting to access NHS services and Cumbria is no exception. For a lot of people this is the first time in a long time they have had an NHS dentist ."
In addition to the new dental practices, NHS Cumbria has recruited dentists from overseas and set up new surgeries in Carlisle and Penrith in a bid to improve access to NHS dental care .
