Access To NHS Dentists In Wigan Improves

Mon, 26 Apr 2010

Wigan dental care services have received a major boost after it was announced that seven NHS dental practices in the area are taking on new patients.

According to Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust (PCT), the surgeries will be able to cater for up to 5,000 extra dental patients in total, with opening hours being extended and fixed daytime emergency slots being added.

A spokesman for the PCT said: "This is really good news for the Wigan borough and in particular for those people who are currently seeking local NHS dental services ."

"Our key aims are to increase access to primary care dental services in areas of high deprivation and low take-up, improve the oral health of the local population, encourage children and families to attend primary dental services from a young age and to continue regular attendance as they grow older and provide prevention programmes and good general health outcomes for these children."

The PCT said it was keeping the names of the specific practices with increased capacity a secret in order to prevent a stampede for places.

It added that the money used to boost capacity at the surgeries had come from "planned dental investment monies."
