Orthodontist Receives Second Consecutive Smile Award

Consultant orthodontist, John Scholey, is smiling after winning a top accolade at the Smile Awards for the year in a row.

The NHS dentist, who works as the lead clinician at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, was named the winner of the Orthodontic Smile category of the 2010 Smile Awards, which reward clinical excellence in dental and facial aesthetics .

Dr Scholey, who was one of the winners of the first Smile Awards event in 2009, helps improve severely deformed smiles in both young and adult patients at the Staffordshire hospitals.

"You can see when the braces come off there is a wow factor and confidence is improved," he said.

"More and more research has shown there are psychological effects of spaced and sticking out teeth, it can affect self esteem."

Dr Scholey qualified as a dentist in Birmingham in 199. He earned a Masters degree in orthodontics in Liverpool in 1998 and also received an exit Fellowship in Orthodontics in 2003 following more specialist training.

As well as working for the NHS, he runs his owns private practices in Staffordshire and also lectures widely on clinical orthodontics across Europe and the Middle East.
