Portsmouth Residents Offered Free Dental Treatment

Mon, 09 Aug 2010

Residents in Portsmouth will be offered the chance to receive free dental treatment next month at the city’s new Dental Academy.

The new state-of-the-art academy will provide free care for hundreds of local residents when it opens in September.

A comprehensive range of general dental treatments, including fillings, gum treatment and dentures, will be carried out by final year dental and dental hygiene students, who will be supervised by qualified staff.

Registration at the Portsmouth Dental Academy is also open to patients from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with staff keep on targeting those who do not have a dentist, who may not have seen one for years or those who have very poor dental health .

"This is a great opportunity for people who have been without a dentist for some time to have free, quality, dental work in modern, relaxed, state-of-the-art facilities," commented Dental Academy director Sara Holmes.

"Patients should not be worried that treatment is carried out by students – they are all highly trained, work under close supervision and many are within months of embarking on careers in professional practice."

"Patients who register will be screened to assess their suitability for treatment, which will take place from September onwards."

She added that the academy is working alongside local Primary Care Trusts and local dentists to promote good oral health in the area.
