Britons Travelling Up To 16 Miles For NHS Dental Care

Thu, 15 Jul 2010

Britons are having to travel up to 16 miles to have their teeth checked by an NHS dentist, new research has found.

A study by Tesco Dental Insurance discovered that the average UK family lives at least nine miles away from their nearest NHS dental practice .

However, in cities and town such as Aberystwyth and Newcastle, people are forced to travel an average of 16 miles and 13 miles respectively for a dental check-up.

The research also showed that residents of Gloucester, Aberdeen, York and Plymouth suffer from a shortage of dentists offering NHS treatment.

Jeremy Sutton, head of Tesco Dental Insurance, said the findings underline that Britons are "prepared to go the extra mile to receive affordable dental care ".

A recent survey by the Department of Health revealed that nine out of ten Britons were able to see an NHS in the two years to March 2010.

The GP Patient Survey found that 92 per cent of people who tried to book a dental appointment on the NHS were successful – highlighting a big improvement in dental access figures.
