US Dentist Makes Jurassic Effort To Ease Kids Dental Fears

Tue, 29 Jun 2010

A dentist in the US has given his surgery a Jurassic makeover in a bid to make child patients less nervous about having their teeth checked.

Dr Andre Gillespie, who runs a dental care centre in Colorado, said he wanted to create "an atmosphere that wouldn't intimidate his patients" whose ages range from infants to 20-year-olds.

The end result was a dinosaur theme and the slogan ‘Li'l Teeth Dentistry, a surgery of Jurassic proportions!’

The theme is present throughout the whole of the surgery, from the T-rex and raptor footprints on the concrete floor to the murals which feature dinosaurs and prehistoric foliage. Even X-rays are taken inside a giant, partially excavated dinosaur egg.

"When the kids leave here, I don't want them to talk about going to the dentist," Dr Gillespie said.

"I want them to talk about the cool dinosaur or fossil on the wall. If you can have positive distractions, it's a very good experience and they'll want to come back."

Molly Perira, associate executive director of the Colorado Dental Association, commented: "For dentists to make a greater effort to make kids more comfortable creates a more positive outlook about dentists for the rest of their lives."
