Millions Of Brits Avoiding Dental Check-ups

Tue, 18 May 2010

Nearly 20 million Brits have avoided visiting the dentist for a check-up in the last five years, new research has revealed.

A study conducted by The Implantium Network found a worrying 42 per cent of the UK population has neglected seeing a dentist since 2005, with many people still being deterred by the cost of dental treatment .

Of those who admitted to avoiding a dental check-up, 14 per cent (6.4 million) said it was because of concerns about costs, while 7 per cent (3.2 million) said they were worried about possible problems a dentist might uncover.

A further 7 per cent said there was a lack of NHS dentists in their area, while 10 per cent said they had found previous trips to the dentist an intimidating experience.

Furthermore, the research revealed that more than 900,000 Britons have not had their teeth checked in the last five years because their employers would not give them time off work.

Commenting on the findings, Jason Buglass, managing director of The Implantium Network, said dental practitioners in the must increase the flexibility of their charges and treatment hours if they want to increase patient numbers and "maximise returns".

He added: "The pent-up desire for change in the industry has been reinforced by the successful launch of the Implantium Network, which comprises 150 dental practitioners across the UK and offers dental implants 37 per cent cheaper than the industry average."

"Innovative networks and pricing strategies such as these will help deliver a competitive edge for dentists looking to increase the numbers of patients on their books and drive revenues from more complex procedures."
