Mon, 18 Oct 2010

Dental care services in Stoke-on-Trent will be boosted by a new NHS dental practice from the start of 2011.

The city council is to consider a planning application for the conversion of the old Autoglass repair garage in Leek Road, Hanley, into a new state-of-the-art dental surgery .

If green the green light, the practice will open for business in January and will provide dental treatment to around 7,000 patients from Bentilee, Abbey Hulton, Berry Hill and part of Hanley – areas with poor dental access rates.

As well three treatment suites, the centre will also include patient assessment and oral health education rooms and offices for two full-time dentists and one part-time dentist .

The surgery is part of wider investment plans by the Stoke-on-Trent Primary Care Trust, which aims to tackle to the city's traditionally poor dental health record by improving access to NHS dentistry .

Dr Shamsi, who will lead the new centre, said: "We are looking forward to helping address the oral health inequalities that clearly exist in the wards of Hanley East, Townsend, Bentilee and Berry Hill."

"We will deliver services with a highly skilled multi-task team using state-of-the art equipment."

According to latest figures, just 57 per cent of Stoke-on-Trent's 250,000 population had their oral health checked by a dentist in the two years to March 2009.
