Access To NHS Dental Care In Scotland Hits Record High

Mon, 28 Feb 2011

The number of people registered with an NHS dentist in Scotland has risen to a record high, according to new Government figures.

The recently released data showed that 83 per cent of children and 69 per cent of adults had access to NHS dental care in December – a significant increase on 2007 levels.

Overall, an average of 72 per cent of Scotland’s population were registered with an NHS dentist at the start of 2011.

Shona Robison, Scotland’s public health minister, said: "The Scottish Government has made significant investments in dentistry and we now have more NHS dentists than ever before."

"Today's figures show an extra million Scots, including the vast majority of children living north of the border, now have access to NHS dental treatment ."

However, Liberal Democrat health spokesman Jamie Stone said people in rural and remote parts of Scotland were still being left behind, with the statistics still showing large regional differences in dental patient registrations.

He said: "The Aberdeen postgraduate dental school should be bringing more dentists to areas like the north east and the Highlands, but obviously not enough is being done to persuade them to stay."

"Everyone has an equal right to access NHS services including dentistry, no matter where in the country they live."
