A new study by consumer group Which? has revealed a huge variation in the cost of private dental treatment .
The Which? research, carried out last year, found that treatment prices quoted by over 400 private dental practices in the UK varied wildly, from £45 to £124 for an initial check-up and £250 to £518 for a crown.
It also discovered that many surgeries fail to provide clear information on whats included in an initial check-up, with just 56 per cent of practices including the cost of an X-ray and just 19 per cent listing the price of a scale and polish .
Overall, only seven out of the 40 private practices visited by Which? mystery shoppers had their prices displayed.
A separate survey by the consumer watchdog highlighted other bad practices by private dental clinics .
The recent poll of over 1,800 patients who had undergone private dental treatment in the past two years found the less than half were given a treatment plan and cost estimate before the dental work began.
