Up to 5,000 NHS dental places in Accrington, Lancashire, are set to become available with the opening of a new dental practice .
The surgery is expected to open in April at the site of a former furniture store in Argyle Street. Work will be carried out by four full-time dentists .
The news comes as a welcome boost for Accrington which has suffered from a major lack of NHS dentists .
Stefanos Thomaidis, who along with his business partner Craig Farrell have won an East Lancashire PCT tender for a new contract in the town, said: "The town is an area of need for NHS dentistry and we are really looking forward to opening up there."
"There will be four dental chairs and over 5,000 patients. The PCT went out to tender on this and we feel that it is a service that we would like to offer."
Mr Thomaidis, who also operates a private cosmetic dentistry clinic in Barnoldswick called Diamond Smiles, added: "We are hoping to be operating the Accrington site from April 1 but there is a lot of work to do before then. At this stage we are a long way off being ready to talk to prospective patients."
"Our current premises is predominantly private but we do strongly believe in the National Health Service and we are looking forward to this venture.
"There is a big need for an NHS practice in Accrington."
